Introduction
The United States of America uses the death penalty capital punishment more often as compared to other western countries (Steiker C & Steiker J, 2020). The sentence is used in twenty-nine states in the country. The last execution was performed in 2003, and on November 30 of 2019, a judge blocked the government from carrying on more executions that were planned to start from December, mumbling the criminal justice department plans to restore the death penalty. Certain crimes are only punished through the death penalty, which is referred to as capital crimes, capital felonies, capital offences (Raufu, 2020). These are offences that are usually related to the murder of individuals, or mass murder, sexual abuse to children, annoying rape cases, treason, terrorism, piracy and many more of that kind (Raufu, 2020).
On March 5, 2020, the state of Alabama executed the death penalty through a lethal injection to Nathaniel Woods at the William C. Holman Correctional Facility, which is in Atmore, Alabama (Steiker C & Steiker J, 2020). Nathaniel woods had been found guilty in 2005 for being involved in the shooting of three police officers, which resulted in their deaths. The offences were conducted in Birmingham, Alabama, where there was also an attempt to murder the fourth officer. There was another man by the name Kerry Spenser who had also been convicted of the same crime who was on death row. The prosecutor of Michael woods had a strong argument that it was Spenser who shot the officers and not woods. The execution has raised very many mixed feelings as many people in the country at large had shown concern for the inmate as there was no clear evidence that he was the one who shot the officers. Many famous and public figures like Martin Luther King III also wrote a letter to Ivey, who is the governor after the request to meet and talk to her in person was not granted. In his letter, he said that the courts had mishandled the case of Nathaniel Woods, and it would lead to irreversible injustice by killing an innocent man (Steiker C & Steiker J, 2020). Kim Kardashian West, who is an advocate for human rights and a popular figure in the state, was also advocating for Nathaniel's case to be reviewed.
The court said that Nathaniel woods acted in a violent way when the officers came to the house where they were selling "crack." He was convicted on a violent crime that led to murder to three officers and injuries to the fourth on who survived. Nathaniel had many supporters who felt that the judgement towards Nathaniel was unfair(Novak, 2020). After the execution, the Alabama laws of the death penalty are being examined by the leaders' civil rights as they have been viewed as unjust or unfair. The criminal justice department makes these laws, and the civil rights think that it should be stopped. The attorney who was representing Kerry Spenser said that the death penalty should be put to an end because it can never be administered relatively (Novak, 2020).
Conclusion
I think that people should not be administered to death penalties. Some people have been convicted earlier of crimes that were seen later as misjudgment, or the real person who committed the crime comes out. People should be put into jail and serve sentences as their cases are being revealed. There are direct cases that have evidence such as terrorisms or mass shoot out that affect the community at large, which is primarily advocated for execution. Cases that do not have enough evidence should not be rushed into death penalties.
