Reflection On Women Inequality In The Workplace

Carnahan, S., & Greenwood, B. N. (2018). Managers’ political beliefs and gender inequality among subordinates: Does his ideology matter more than hers? Administrative Science Quarterly, 63(2), 287-322.

In researching on women inequality in the workplace, I have managed to understand various issues touching on their quality. Workplace of today teaches about the need to uphold equality issues and treat all the employees similarly regardless of their gender. It is the attitudes and beliefs of the managers in places of work; however, that made me gain more insight into how they conduct their operations.

According to Carnahan & Greenwood (2018), many of the beliefs of mangers are shaped by the nation political ideologies. This is something I had not thought of as being crucial in influencing how managers do their work. Many of the political ideologies shape how we view gender inequality, roles and stereotypes. It is through such beliefs that women can get treated well at the workplace or face further forms of gender inequality. Conservative anger, for instance, is more likely to perpetuate gender inequality because of their beliefs. Many of the policies that they come up with are more likely to be so discriminative to the female gender and thus promoting further inequality in the modern workplace. According to conservative’s, women are suited for family duties, and therefore, many of them get denied crucial roles and promotions by such managers. Liberal managers on the other might less likely discriminate based on their beliefs unlike the Conservatives

What I have I learn I that despite the progress we have made as a society the beliefs and the attitudes that we hold play a critical role in society. On managers, gender equality should always come above our expectations as we should not let traditional views about women shape how we hire or assign duties within organizations.

Fuhrman’s, V. (2018, Oct 23). Women in the Workplace (A Special Report) --- What #MeToo Has to Do with the Workplace Gender Gap: A New Survey from Lean In and McKinsey Shows Both the Pervasiveness of Sexual Harassment and the Persistence of Inequality. That Isn't a Coincidence

Sexual harassment is another vice that contributes a lot to the gendered inequality within the workplace in the modern world despite the fight against the #MeToo movement exposed how women are violated by men who take advantage of their positions within the society. It is through this exposure that I got to understand how women face a lot of gender problems but cannot express it for fear of getting ridiculed.

What is more revealing is the fact that this vice is prevalent in the fields where males are dominating, and women are trying to penetrate? What is more astonishing is that this report shows that women shy away from male dominate field not because they don’t have the ability but because of sexual harassment (Fuhrmans, 2018). Majority of women highlight that at some point in their lives, they have faced sexual harassment at the workplace that resulted in gender inequality. I have learned from this that women still face sexual harassment and many fears coming out, which results in more gender inequalities.

Based on the revelations about sexual harassment, I have understood further how this problem still exist even in the modern-day and how it affects women. I now know more about ways in which this vice is executed how women suffer in silences because of fear. I have changed my assumptions that Sexual harassment is not that rampant as from the #MeToo movement is probably in all sectors within the society. I view this as the continued way of fighting the gender equality steps that we have made as a society.

Georgeac, O., & Rattan, A. (2019). Progress in women's representation in top leadership weakens people's disturbance with gender inequality in other domains — Journal of Experimental Psychology: General, 148(8), 1435.

Representation is another area that women have faced continuous changes to date as they fit to be part of the top leadership. One of the issues that have long existed is the vast pay gap between men and women that have made many women not to progress. The research by Georgeac & Rattan (2019) has made me learn of the how women even in the modern world face issue of pay gaps, segregation and gender prejudices that hinder their chance of getting leadership positions. I have learned from this research on women leadership that they must work hard and fight for equality, especially today when the people think the fight is over. The male domination in significant sectors within the society is an indication of how women lack voices on various issues. This revelation has changed my assumption that women had made progress in terms of representation across multiple sectors.

Scarborough, W. J., Lambouths III, D. L., & Holbrook, A. L. (2019). Support of workplace diversity policies: The role of race, gender, and beliefs about inequality. Social Science Research, 79, 194-210.

Diversity and equality issues form a considerable aspect of the lives of workers in various parts of the world. Despite the policies about diversity and equality being present in multiple institutions what I have understood is that they are only useful if the employees and the managers of organization offer support. Research findings indicate that the help of the various policies against discrimination in the workplace varies based on the individual's race and gender. Majority of the white people at the workplace do not find this policy necessary, unlike the blacks and Latinas who view this as necessary. What changed in my understanding is that despite policies exiting, many people feel differently depending on their race and gender. Managers and institutions thus have a massive role in shaping how people view certain things, especially policies on diversity.

Ansley, D. (2018). Has the Law Been Unsuccessful in Curtailing Sexual Harassment in Organizations? Contemporary Readings in Law and Social Justice, 10(2), 79-85.

Sexual harassment in the workplace has been an enormous problem in society, and various laws have been put in place to curtail this vice. What I have understood is that policies on sexual harassment have been of great help in reducing this problem. Issues, however, have arisen in the women have weaponized sexual harassment to get men out of their positions and jobs. While we agree sexual harassment is still present at the workplace, it is evident that technical fields such as science lead in the discrimination of women based on their gender. This makes change my assumption that women are afraid of technical areas such as science, but instead, they avoid them for the gender harassment they face in the same departments.

Hide, I., & Wilson, A. E. (2019). History backfires: Reminders of past injustices against women undermine support for workplace policies promoting women: organizational Behavior and Human Decision Processes.

The issue of inequalities usually brings about the past injustices that affected the minorities.

Policies usually are undermined if they are framed well for the public. What I have understood is that reminding people about the evils of the past is no guarantee that they will offer support to a particular policy. Another argument that changed my assumption is men compared to women are more likely to change their support for a policy if reminded of past injustices or inequalities. This changed my assumption that people support specific policies based on the fact that there have been injustices.

Conclusion

In conclusion, we can say that gender equality has made some progress over the years. Many women today get hired and assigned roles that they previously were turned down. Issues of inequality still exist today in various institutions and the fight by women should continue for more of these challenges to be addressed as we head into the future. Sexual harassment is still a problem today, and to deal with this problem. It is worth noting that many women are suffering but afraid to come out. Th fight for equality, however, should not be used as a strategy to come with allegations that can hinder the growth of men. Everyone regardless of their beliefs should support gender equality through and help for it to be successful
