Introduction
Gender inequality is one of the issues that have been discussed for decades, with the main focus on providing equal opportunity for women. Ever since, women have always been discriminated against, due to various prejudices and stereotypes which have been proved by research and science not be very wrong. With more women getting into education and being successful in politics and careers, it is clear that the line between the ability of men and women is tiny. Several countries have tried to bridge this inequality issue by providing women and girls with opportunities that make it favorable for women to be equal to men in society and have equal chances. However, there are still several cases, spread across various parts of the world that show gender inequality exists.
Though it is the 21st century, women in the American workplace are not enjoying equal rights as their male counterparts. This is despite advancements and improvements that have been made to educate and empower women in the past. Women are systematically facing discrimination in terms of unequal wages, sexual harassment, and misrepresentation. Women are seen as the weaker sex and are consequently being treated differently from the male employees, with repercussions not only to their careers but also to their income and their health, considering all stress this put them through.
It is a commonplace to find that women are bypassed whenever there is an opportunity for a promotion at the workplace, even when they possess similar, if not even better professional skills as their male counterparts. The term "Glass ceiling" is utilized as a metaphor for explaining how women fail to secure top positions due to discrimination. Gender inequality is a big problem in American businesses today, but not only in America. Women are facing gender inequality in markets all over the world, in some countries, this problem does not even arise because of the traditional role that women play; the discrimination problem is still vast and unsolved. It is, therefore, timely to discuss, analyze, and try to solve this unfairness. As such, this paper explains the history of gender inequity, its magnitude, its presence in other parts of the world, and its repercussions in the modern society.
A study of the United Kingdom indicates how about quarters of the companies pay men more than women. This can be explained best by the position that women hold in the companies. The majority of the top posts is being held by men and thus may explain the higher figure that they have concerning the earnings for women. Women are likely to be given the lower portions, and therefore, they get fewer profits. This does not necessarily mean that payment is discrimination, but it provides a hint that there may be discrimination in the distribution of activities, duties, and responsibilities. There may also be discrimination in the promotion where men obtain development in their work while women maintain the lower positions that they are already serving. In other parts of the world, women are completely denied the opportunity of working and doing the same responsibility that men are doing. For example, in most countries to the middle east, most women stay at home and assume what s stereotyped as the responsibility for women. They take care of the children and become home managers. This denies them an opportunity to explore the external world, their potential s, and consequently their careers. For example, when the united states wanted to withdraw its support in Afghanistan, the women movement groups protested against this move. They claimed that if external forces ere it darn, they would be discriminated against as it were before. They explain that actually, it is the forces that are restaining the Afghan men fro dicriminimnating them. Some of the immediate consequences of this would be them losing their jobs and going back to assume the "wife duties."
In to 19th century, for example, Japanese men were known to be the ones ho work while women stay at home to take care of the children. Men would often go to their white-collar jobs, and when they are done in the evening, they will meet in pubs and hen later go home. This was the norm, and they could not even take care of their children. It was almost aboral to see a ma carrying a baby in a public place or doing the activities which were through to be for women like cooking. For women who went to school, they would be scolded and highly criticized. All these discriminate against women.
In the united states of America, the most common discrimination includes sexual harassment, lower wages, and misrepresentation. The strong influence of men would even make the buy out the law to defend their positions. They base it on the assumption that women are of the weaker sex, and therefore, they have no strength for self-defense. This discrimination is not only in the workplace but even in school. It is a common phenomenon not only in the united states of America but also in other countries to have girls not doing the so-called " hard subjects" like mathematics and sciences. It is still based on the assumption that girls are weaker even in intellectual strength and thus should not do these hard disciplines. Men dominate moat of technical courses like engineering and medicine. The fact is not that girls cannot get so it, but rather, the low motivation and wrong psychology that it is not their thing.
In the developing countries, the case is still the same, with men influencing women. Right from the point of leadership, it explains it all. The men occupy almost all companies, top positions in the countries. In some countries, especially the third world countries, families would rather educate a boy than a girl. The women are just taken as jects of wealth through marriage, and that is all. Some view is educating then as a waste of resources, and thus they won't educate them. Discrimination based on gender ability is also very evident in most of the military personnel, with women recording the least members of the armed forces.
My View
In my view, the gender inequality issue is efficient and needs to be rectified. Men, generally, have a desire for power, even over other men, and be seen to be at then the top. Therefore, their first objects for dominion would be the women around them. Men are physically stronger than women because of their masculinity. This is hat they use to intimidate women more, through physical coercion to silence the women and make them follow their rules and standards. However, it is time for people to realize that problems are not solved through physical strength but by intellectual intelligence. This should be the reason for including women in most of the activities.
The reason for male dominion is also due to t the traditional system, which is still in the mind of people, cultures, and norms, which some communities still follow so deeply. This equality can be achieved with civilization and the refining of view of women in society. This may be easy in some countries which have already seen the contribution of women and have to determine their potential. It only requires the support of the leadership positions and the encouragement of women to come out. This way, equality would be easily achieved, and women are given an equal opportunity.
Objection
Gender inequality may be challenging, as far as people hold o to misleading cultures ad norms. There are parts of this world where civilization is very rampant, and people are educated. Even the women are educated, but they do not step ut to become of influence like men. The reason is that the women themselves had dearly into these cultures and norms and allowed themselves to be dominated. They re relaxed and do not see the reason why they should be given equal opportunity with their male counterparts. Gender inequality in such cases may not make any sense, and any efforts towards creating equality would be very much minimized. For example, among the Hindu community, culture is very key, and this can be seen from. However, learned people still hold on it. Someone would study abroad, for example, in Havard, a lady in that case, but still go back to India, adhering to the family roles. The Iraqi and Russian women likewise hold o culture and would not make any efforts to fight against this.
There are also some activities which require physical strength and therefore, would not be fit for women and thus, remain men dominate. This includes most of the technical activities or heavyweight items. There are also other fields in which science has proven that women perform better, such as care. This may include nursing homes, daycares, hospices, and nursing activities. This is due to the propensity of women being naturality polite, hospitable, and being caring. These are activities that require intensive emotional support, which would fit best with omen. Men tend to be rougher and record low emotional attachments to mot of the things, as women are more emotional than men. Therefore, gender inequality would gain no relevance in such a case.
Replies
It is high time that gender inequality is reviewed, and more effective measures are put in place to ensure that there are fairness and equality fr women. It does not only take measures to be put in place but also teaching men to recognize the significance of women in this world. This way, it would be easier to follow the gender equality measure put in place. Having men know the significance of women would help them even support the women in their lives. There is a case that has been seen, men giving full support to women because of an understanding of what potion women hold in society. The political systems of the world should be the drivers for this, and then it trickles down to companies and even homes. Dire consequences such as leaving one's bad cultural influences would be effected where necessary, and women are encouraged to step out. It is also prudent that women are taught of their potential should be encouraged to be aggressive and take advantage of the opportunities that are presented. International bodies should also help the developing countries and the harsh and volatile environments where women completely have nowhere to start or have little support, and their efforts would be cut short. This gender inequality is a global issue and
Conclusion
In conclusion, Even though many efforts have been made over time, women are still fighting to show that they are equal to men and gain their same rights and benefits. There are various forms of gender inequality, and those are primarily shown in the workplace: unequal wages, sexual harassment, and misrepresentation. Gender inequality can be found in the United States as well in developed and developing countries. It has had a negative socio-economic impact on society, and it will continue to get worst unless robust countermeasures are displayed. The hope that by 2059 the wage gender gap will start to close should not be enough even to think that the battle for gender inequality is already won. It should be an incentive to fight harder and try to end the discrimination as soon as possible not only for women's benefit but also for the benefit of their male counterparts and companions.
