Introduction
Different individuals and particularly philosophers have different views and perceptions on the issue of abortion. Some defend the issue of abortion, arguing that it is the choice of an individual to carry out an abortion or not to. Others are against abortion by viewing it is ethically wrong and prohibited since it is looked at as the killing of a person like any other, and thus it is against the law. The reading on Thomson’s argument about abortion and likening it to the case of the violinist has a lot to prove how people view abortion and where they base their arguments to support or oppose it.
View on Abortion
According to the information given in the reading, Thomson strongly supports abortion and bases his argument on the right of a mother to decide what happens in her own body. The argument is made to show that the decision of a pregnant mother justifies abortion. However, as long as the mother has conceived, she is carrying a fetus which has to be taken as a human person from the beginning. The notion that the fetus is not a being is wrong and should not be used as the reason to justify the carrying out of abortion (Stone). The fetus as a human person has got the right to live the same way all the born and mature people have the right to life which should not in any way be violated or taken away from them.
Therefore the argument of Thomson that the pregnant mothers or pregnant women have a right to choose what is to happen in their bodies to undertake abortion is a misleading argument and belief. At the same time, Thomson argues that there are cases in which the decision to abort would be supported (Stone). For example, a raped fourteen-year-old girl who finds herself pregnant after this criminal act of rape can choose to terminate the fetus as a way of consoling herself and the law that denies that is insane according to Thomson.
The above argument of Thomson is also misleading because it gives women the strength to get into this issue of abortion. There is no valid reason as to why one who is not experiencing health problems should be allowed to involve in abortion. The right to decide on what happens in an individual's body is not in any way considered the same way as the reason for undertaking an abortion (Thompson). The fetus becomes a person from conception throughout its development period until birth, and it should be given the respect that is given to other human beings because it has its rights as a person.
Conclusion
Wrapping up the view of abortion, the arguments that defend abortion violate the law and rights of a person. Abortion should not be allowed for any reason whether the mother has the right to decide what she wants with her body and life. The arguments of Thomson have been perceived as misleading and thus been criticized by other philosophers who don't support this issue. Many philosophers are against abortion because it takes away life, and this is not allowed even according to the religious beliefs and practices of the people. There should be no laws that give any single permission for anyone to undertake abortion.
